"and the Cities Hostile and the Towns Unfriendly" is the visual form of urban theory, specifically the historiographic component which helps us see the past of city in our present. New forms take place of the old, but that which is bypassed is still around, lurking in the periphery. They exist not out of habit, but because their collective existence is necessary for the city to function. The film, through a two part structure embedded in six individual chapters shows this "long-form" of the city. Each chapter shows a spatial category that is a part of the story of the city, and couples it with a visual description of what sort of productive activity is associated with it. This it does so in a quasi-documentary sense for the present, but also to force a recall to the past. Beyond that the film is decidedly a critique of the present condition calling the viewer to examine it.
